Round Rock ISD recently named Vicky Buckley “Mentor of the Year” at Callison Elementary. Vicky has been a UWWC campaign volunteer for many years through her employer, Texas Guaranteed Student Loan. As it turns out, Vicky also gives generously of her time as a mentor.
Each week, Vicky mentors two elementary students: one through the STARS Mentor Program with RRISD, and the other with the Seedling Foundation. She gives each of them one-on-one time, and provides stability at school when there may be a lot of stress for the student at home. She even helps them with their schoolwork.
Vicky has her Masters in Education and emphasizes that the early years of education are critical to a successful future. “I tell them how important it is to go to school and complete their education. Mentoring is a way that I can help a struggling child to get back on track.”
Pam Butler, Counselor and Mentor Coordinator at Callison Elementary says, “Vicky is everything you could ask for in a mentor: dedicated, dependable, kind and always wanting to do more.” UWWC believes that mentoring is one of the best ways to increase the high school graduation rate over the long term. Thank you, Vicky, for your service to the community!
