Volunteer Information

VITA Volunteers are front and center of the fight for the financial stability of every person in every Williamson County community. 

As a member of the VITA team, you will have the opportunity to work one-on-one with individuals and families who are looking for help completing their tax return. Whether it is a single parent looking for help, an older couple who will benefit from your knowledge, or a student who has questions about education credits or deductions, you have the opportunity to make an immediate impact on someone's life. No experience in accounting is required. We will provide all the training you need to become certified and will continue to support you with on-site staff throughout the tax season.

Ways you can volunteer

Tax Preparer

Volunteer Tax Preparers work one-on-one with clients to complete and file their tax return. You will use TaxSlayer software to walk clients step-by-step through the process. Preparers should have a high comfort level working with people from all walks of life. Previous experience in accounting or tax preparation is not required. Volunteer preparers must complete training (8 hours for returning volunteers), pass an IRS certification exam, and sign and comply with the IRS Volunteer agreement. 

  • Time commitment: Successful completion of training and IRS Certification tests prior to volunteering at a site. Volunteers are encouraged to serve at any site each week for a 4-hour shift during the tax season. Hours are flexible on weekday evenings and/or weekends. Volunteers may work at a combination of sites if they wish.
  • Training: Volunteers must complete training and pass the IRS certification exam. New volunteers must complete 16 hours of training and returning volunteers must complete 8 hours of training. Expert trainers are available to provide coaching and resources throughout the entire process.

Translator

Each site is in need of bilingual volunteers to guide clients through the filing process. Translators will help clients and volunteer tax preparers communicate effectively, and ensure that clients understand their tax return and their tax obligations. During slow times, translators may be asked to assist with site support tasks such as greeting clients and administrative tasks on site. Volunteers must sign and comply with the IRS Volunteer agreement.

  • Time commitment: Volunteers are encouraged to serve at any site each week for a 4-hour shift during the tax season. Hours are flexible on weekday evenings and/or weekends. Volunteers may work at a combination of sites if they wish.
  • Training: A short online Standards of Conduct Intake and Interview training module must be completed people to the first volunteer shift. 

Greeter

A friendly, welcoming greeter provides a positive client experience from the time a client enters the site. The greeter will manage sign in, review the intake form to ensure that necessary documentation is available, and provide assistance to volunteers with administrative duties. Someone with a welcoming personality and the ability to work with people from all walks of life will be successful in this role. Bilingual volunteers are encouraged. Site Support volunteers should be 18 years of age or be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Volunteers must sign and comply with the IRS Volunteer agreement.

Training

All volunteers are required to complete training according to their roles. Training opportunities will be offered in December and January.
