Volunteer Positions

Volunteer Tax Preparer

Volunteer Tax Preparers are needed at all sites to help qualified families and individuals prepare their Federal tax returns. Previous experience is not necessary. Tax Preparer volunteers provide friendly customer service as they prepare and file taxes for eligible taxpayers using Taxslayer software. Comfort with Windows-based computer software and working with people from all walks of life is needed to be successful in this role. Volunteers must sign and comply with the IRS Volunteer agreement. 

  • Time commitment: Successful completion of training and IRS Certification tests prior to volunteering at a site. Volunteers are encouraged to serve at any site each week for a 4-hour shift during the 16-week tax season. Hours are flexible on weekday evenings and/or weekends. Volunteers may work at a combination of sites if they wish.
     
  • Training: Volunteers must complete training and pass the IRS certification exam. New volunteers must complete 16 hours of training and returning volunteers must complete 8 hours of training. Expert trainers are available to assist throughout the entire process.

Site Support Volunteer

Each site needs volunteers to greet clients and provide support to the Volunteer Tax Preparers by reviewing client information to ensure they have the necessary documentation. Support volunteers will also assist with the setup and cleanup of the Tax Center Site which includes setting up and taking down tables and chairs, setting up computers and printers, assembling forms, emptying trash containers, etc. A welcoming personality and ability to work with people from all walks of life are needed to be successful in this role. Bilingual volunteers are encouraged. Site Support volunteers should be 18 years of age or be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Volunteers must sign and comply with the IRS Volunteer agreement.

  • Training: A short online Standards of Conduct Intake and Interview training must be completed people to the first volunteer shift. 

Volunteer Translator

Each site needs at least one Spanish-speaking translator to assist clients and tax preparers in completing the tax return. Translators may also be asked to assist with site support tasks such as greeting clients, setting up or taking down tables and chairs, loading and unloading laptops or printers, assembling forms, emptying trash containers, etc.
